Founded in 1922 by Decio Toso and Giuseppe D’Alpaos, the company set itself a double aim: a return to specific aspects of Murano glass (the use of copper-wheel, sand and diamond-point to engrave surfaces; decoration with vitreous enamels; the creation of mirrors using age-old techniques) and an exploration new artistic languages and technologies. For more than fifty years, the artistic director responsible for glass engraving has been the famous Bohemian master craftsman Franz Pelzel, while in the field of design the company has worked with such figures as Guido Balsamo Stella, Vittorio Zecchin, Tono Zancanaro, Vinicio Vinello, Giò Ponti and Giorgio De Chirico. The sons of the founders – Mario D’Alpaos, a master craftsman, and Luigi (Gigi) Toso – both began working in the company at a very young age, under the guidance of Franz Pelzel. Heads of the business since 1970, they have established fruitful collaboration with numerous artists, including Riccardo Licata, Agostino Venturini, Ettore Sottsass, Fulvio Bianconi, Vincenzo Eulisse, Marco Zanini, Wendy Wheatley and Renato Guttuso.
