The museums of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia are open all year round, with longer opening hours during the April to October period, and shorter from November to March. Details are given in the reception area of each museum.
Entrance tickets are required for all the museums (for the various kinds of ticket available for different categories of visitor, see the details in the reception area of each museum).
To guarantee that visitors to the St. Mark’s Square museums, to Ca’ Rezzonico, Ca’ Pesaro and the Glass Museum have the opportunity to see the collection properly, ticket sales are suspended one hour before closing. At Palazzo Mocenigo, Casa Goldoni, Museo Fortuny and the Lace Museum, sales are suspended one half-hour before closing.
Visitors can remain in the museum up to – but not beyond – closing time. If visitors already holding a valid ticket arrive after the closure of the ticket offices, they may obtain entrance. However, whatever time they enter the museum, they must leave at closing time; and their ticket cannot be re-used for that museum.
Bulky bags, rucksacks, umbrellas or any other objects that the staff deem unsuitable cannot be taken into the exhibition areas and must be left at the cloakrooms set aside for this purpose. This service is free. In the case of lost property or damage, the Museum is, upon proof of value, responsible for up to one thousands euro in compensation for goods or property.
Out of respect for others, visitors are not allowed into the museums in beachwear or skimpy clothing; admission will also be denied to those with covered faces.
Safety and Health. Respect for other visitors and for the works on display
Smoking is forbidden in the museums.
There are rubbish bins in the external areas of the museums. Inside, it is strictly forbidden to discard paper, tins, bottles or other refuse.
Animals will not be allowed into the museum.
Food and Drink
For reasons of hygiene and to protect the works on display, one cannot eat or drink within the exhibition areas or in any other area of the museum not set aside for this purpose.
It is forbidden to take photographs or to film within the museums.
The use of cell phones is not allowed in the exhibition areas.
To protect the works on display and facilitate the flow of visitors through the museums, the routes of visits are carefully marked. One must, therefore, respect these indications and not move beyond any barriers.
Role of Museum Staff
The museum’s custodians are available to provide visitors with general information regarding the routes through the museum, the collections or the various museum tickets available. They are also responsible for the security of the works and the smooth flow of visitors through the museum. Any instructions from the staff must therefore be followed carefully.
The works of art, furniture and tapestries on display may be looked at but not touched. Hence, one is forbidden to sit on the chairs and sofas that are part of the displays.
Guides, teachers and tour leaders can give commentaries, but at a volume that does not disturb other visitors. No sort of amplification system may be used.
If with a group, one must follow the guide without shouting or talking in a loud voice; children must not be allowed to run around and play. Behaviour must be appropriate to one’s surroundings, in order to avoid damage to the works on display and annoyance to the other visitors.
Teachers should come to the museum having already decided upon a route and presentation that will maintain the interest of the children within their group. In preparing this they may draw on the information and various presentations available on the Venice Museum Authority website.
Such preparation means that the children will be able to get something out of their visit, and it will reduce any risk of undisciplined behaviour.
Teachers are fully responsible for the children in their care, and thus for any damage or harm the children might cause to either goods or persons. It is their task to make sure that the children’s behaviour meets the requirements laid down in the present regulations. The discretionary decisions that may be taken by museum staff or management to protect property and works in circumstances where there appears to be a risk of damage to property or disturbance to other visitors.
Where visitors persist in behaviour that puts goods and persons at risk, the museum personnel may eject them from the premises; the museum management also reserves the right to undertake any other action that may be deemed appropriate. In particularly serious cases, the Museum Management reserves the right to take legal action.
