Venice, 4 – 12 September 2021

The Venice Glass Week, the international festival founded in 2017 to celebrate, support and promote the art of glassmaking – the artistic and economic activity for which Venice has been known around the world for over a thousand years – is now in its fifth edition, and will be held in Venice, Murano and Mestre from 4th to 12th September 2021.
This year’s event has a new “title-hashtag” #VivaVetro! – a cheer of enthusiasm – also expressed visually via the spectrum of colours in the new graphic image – which is designed to convey the timeless energy of the material of glass, and aims to give support and renewed vigour to the sector of Murano glass production which, after months of closure, is recovering and restarting with optimism.

Once again, this year The Venice Glass Week – an initiative promoted by the Comune di Venezia and conceived by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Giorgio Cini-LE STANZE DEL VETRO, Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and by the most important organization associated with the glass sector, Consorzio Promovetro Murano, which manages the trademark of the Veneto Region Vetro Artistico® Murano – is part of the programme of “Great Events” supported by the Regione del Veneto.

MUSEI CIVICI OF VENICE’S PROGRAMME

PERLE 1.0

Great attention will be given this year to the art of glass beads, which was recently awarded Intangible Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO, with a series of initiatives titled Perle 1.0 organized in Mestre and Venice by the Comune di Venezia together with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.

Perle in Vetrina is the difused exhibition in shop windows which will display original glass necklaces created by important contemporary masters and designers.

From 6th September to 6th October in Forte Marghera visitors will be able to admire the photographic exhibition Perle 1.0 – Perlere and Impiraresse. Immagini tra ieri e oggi per raccontare un’arte, which recounts the craft of glass beads and impiraresse from the twentieth century to today.

Adults and children will also be able to participate in bead workshops taking place in Mestre, Forte Marghera, on the Lido and at the Scuola del Vetro Abate Zanetti in Murano.

Palazzo Mocenigo will host The History of glass beads a three-day conference from 11th to 13th September, curated by Augusto Panini, an international expert on beads.
As part of the events of the conference, Friday 10 September 17.00 will be presented at Palazzo Mocenigo the volume Glass Jewels – from Prehistory to the III Millennium by Bianca Cappello and Augusto Panini, in the presence of the authors.

The project involves fourteen Murano glass masters from as many concessionary companies of the Vetro Artistico® Murano brand who have put themselves to the test for the occasion, addressing a theme far from their usual production. In Murano Glass Toys, glass lives, moves and interacts with the viewer: in this magical atmosphere, visitors can experience or relive the emotions related to their childhood and youth.
